Curl Curl runs from the beachfront back along the lagoon, and the homes are a mix of older houses and unit blocks. As on much of the Northern Beaches coast, salt air close to the sand is the main enemy of any hot water system mounted outside. Beaches Hot Water is a free referral service. We connect you with licensed hot water plumbers who cover Curl Curl. We are not plumbers, and you pay nothing for the referral.
Beachfront wear and tear
External tanks, valves and heat pumps near the beach take a beating from salt spray. Casings rust, fittings seize, and a tank can start to look tired well before the typical 8 to 12 year lifespan is up. When you replace, ask about placement on the sheltered side of the house, and have the sacrificial anode checked around year five to help the new tank last.
On the lagoon side, some streets are low-lying. It is worth asking your plumber whether a raised slab or plinth makes sense for your site, and checking your property's flood information with council.
Houses and units
In the unit blocks, individual electric storage tanks in laundries and cupboards are common. Replacing one is usually a like-for-like job that fits the same footprint. Anything on common property, or a change to a different system type, often needs strata approval.
Older houses tend to have more options. An ageing electric tank can be swapped like-for-like, replaced with gas where the street is connected (availability varies street by street, and the plumber confirms it), or upgraded to a heat pump with incentives.
Guide pricing
Repairs run roughly $150 to $600 depending on the part. Like-for-like electric storage swaps run from around $800 to $2,500 installed. Gas storage and continuous flow sit around $1,200 to $3,500 installed. A heat pump costs around $3,000 to $6,000 installed before incentives, and federal STCs plus the NSW Energy Savings Scheme can cut thousands off. Solar has the highest upfront cost. See hot water replacement and the cost guide. The plumber's quote is the figure to go by.
Same-day replacement is often possible for common sizes when you send the details in the morning.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my outdoor tank rust so quickly in Curl Curl?
Salt air near the beach speeds up corrosion on external casings and fittings. A sheltered position and regular anode checks can help the next one last longer.
Is a heat pump a good choice close to the beach?
It can be, as long as it sits out of direct salt spray with good airflow. Ask the installer about a unit and position suited to coastal exposure.
What details should I send with my quote request?
The tank's brand, size and fuel type, a photo of the label, where it sits, and how the plumber gets to it. If you are in a unit, mention any strata requirements.
