Collaroy runs along the beach, with unit blocks lining Pittwater Road and houses close enough to the water to feel the spray. Salt is the constant here, and it is tough on hot water systems. Beaches Hot Water is a free referral service that connects you with licensed hot water plumbers who cover Collaroy. We do not do the plumbing ourselves.
Salt exposure on the beachfront
Few spots on the Northern Beaches get as much salt as the beachfront streets. External tanks, valves, fittings and heat pump fins can corrode noticeably faster than they would a few streets back. To give your system a better run:
- Have the sacrificial anode checked around year five
- Rinse salt off external casings and heat pump fins now and then
- At replacement, place the new unit out of direct salt spray if the layout allows
Storage tanks typically last 8 to 12 years. On the beachfront, expect the lower end, or less for a tank fully exposed to the weather.
Units along the main road
Many Collaroy units have a small electric tank in a cupboard or on a balcony, and some buildings run centralised systems. If the tank serves only your unit and sits inside your lot, replacing it is usually your call. If it is on common property, or you want to change system type, strata approval usually comes first. Balcony units face the same salt problem as the houses, so placement and anode checks matter there too.
Repair or replace, and what it costs
As a guide only:
- Repairs: roughly $150 to $600 depending on the part
- Electric storage swaps: from around $800 to $2,500 installed
- Gas storage and continuous flow: around $1,200 to $3,500 installed
- Heat pumps: around $3,000 to $6,000 installed before incentives, with STCs and the NSW Energy Savings Scheme able to cut thousands off. The installer quotes the net figure.
Mains gas availability varies street by street, and the plumber confirms it. A leaking cylinder is always a replacement. The plumber's quote is the price that counts.
For common tank sizes, same-day replacement is often possible if your request comes in early.
Frequently asked questions
Is a heat pump a good idea right on the beach?
It can be, with care. Ask about coastal-rated models or fin coatings, place the unit away from direct spray, and rinse the fins occasionally.
Can my balcony unit be swapped for a different type?
Possibly, but it usually needs strata approval and enough space and ventilation. Like for like is the simpler path.
Why does my tank keep tripping the power?
Water getting into an element or wiring, sometimes from corroded seals, is a common cause. Turn it off at the switchboard and have a licensed plumber or electrician check it.
